Norvaan Longard

Born 26 years ago to the Longard family of merchants, Norvaan is a brash young man who has not only embraced the military, but also the adventure of life in many forms. Hailing from the Free Cities of Dallaall, his family sent him to the Carvorel Military Academy, from which he graduated. Most recently, he was granted guest status and travelled to the City of Danberg to continue learning military life under recommendation by Jagger Burrell, and finds himself assigned duties within the entourage of Bendroden Lightbringer

Training

Assigned to the Carvorel Military Academy at the age of 16, Norvaan was trained in combat tactics, archery, and logistics. He often argued with the instructors, to the point he began to get a reputation for being abrasive. A few instructors enjoyed the fact a student actually questioned them, and wanted to adapt the battlefield away from tactics that had been tried and tested hundreds of times with only varying degrees of success. Yeonar Drag'huul, one of the top archers of the school, showed him how to properly use bows of all kinds, and their precise application of changing strength into speed, distance, and power. He also told Norvaan to "Attack fast, move faster, and never miss an opening." Sensing an opening in front of him, Norvaan decided to focus on his officer training, and he graduated nine years ago. Soon thereafter, he was tasked by Jagger Burrell to study under Sir Bendroden Lightbringer, a great hero in the Canton Kingdom.

Personality

As a youth, his instructors, and his older brother, Cratoss, had described him as brash, hot-headed, and decisive. He would often paces while thinking. He has an air of confidence when around other military officers, but knows or has learned to keep his mouth shut when dealing with social, religious or philosophical matters. At a young age he converted to the Church of Satoria, imagining himself growing up to be a great wizard. His life led him down a different path, and while not particularly religious, he still offers prayers to her. He often prays for his younger brother Michaal, who applied to the Academy of Arts and Arcane Magicks after showing minor magical ability.

As he has aged, a more balanced version of Norvaan emerged. After the experience of wading through the realities of a civil war, he has become a little less hot-headed, but still quick to make a decision and follow through on it. This has sometimes made him unpopular with his allies, and he often gets second-guessed. He has come to expect that and indeed depend upon them to keep him from, in his words "riding a wild horse over a cliff."

Appearance

No longer the young warrior he once was, Norvaan still wears the armor of a fighting man, and is just as quick to bring his power to bear. A red cloak over his shoulders covers a thick hide armor that has more than a few nicks in it. Beside him sits a black great-bow, nearly the length of his body, but he wields it with ease, seemingly comfortable with its weight. He often crouches down when not in the presence of superiors, preferring to rest on the balls of his feet, padded by some well worn leather boots. Now that he has been knighted, he wears bold colors to be seen and recognized by his men in the midst of battle, to better give orders and make decisions to ensure victory.

At Home

Now a citizen of the Canton Kingdom and a Knight of King Allen, Norvaan has begun rebuilding Castle Creiss, fortifying the position with the sharp mind of a military man. While still under construction, he made himself a temporary home in Danberg, though it has fallen mostly into disuse. Castle Creiss is surrounded by very unforgiving terrain, but Norvaan has utilized this as an advantage. Control over the pass is his primary concern and it is never far from his mind. While away, he has entrusted affairs of the castle to his Seneschal Ence Currian, a young woman highly recommended to him through his mentor, Yeonar Drag'huul, and Althan Notorus, Captain of the Guard, whom Norvaan met at the Academy.

While entrusting a castle to a woman may raise eyebrows, Norvaan has found Ence is entirely capable of handling the day-to-day affairs of running the keep, while he pours over sketched maps of the surrounding areas and focuses on the rebuilding efforts with Captain Notorus. Rumors have surfaced that Norvaan and Miss Currian are more friendly than co-workers, but this has never been proven. Norvaan has little use for the gossip, and as such scoffs when he hears word of it. Captain Notorus shares similar disdain for the rumors, but understands house staff has little more to do than work and talk to each other in the remote location of Creiss.

Current Life

Service under Bendroden Lightbringer

Jagger Burrell has often assigned fresh officers to different military services around the Windman Continent to allow a depth of experience and promotion of the good name of the Free Cities, as well as the Carvorel Military Academy. To this end, he assigned young Norvaan to service of one of the most famous Paladins of Lykora, Bendroden Lightbringer. Sir Lightbringer was the close ally and advisor of Duke Eric Carver, of Pineborough. Norvaan travelled to Danberg, where he met up with a number of young mercenaries hired on as protection for a trip to Canton City. The recent death of King James Smythe required the calling of the Ducal Council, to announce the election of a new king. While attending to duties around the camp, news came from Sir Lightbringer that the crown jewels had been stolen in the night. Tasked with investigating, eventually he and his group stumbled upon a house of thieves, who had stolen and hidden the jewels away in a fireplace.

Promotion into the Roses

After the jewels were returned safely, Norvaan began to resume regular duties once again, tasked with retrieving supplies from the city marketplace. While he was preparing the only way he knew how, the younger men joked at his expense, called him 'overcautious' and said this was going to be a simple errand. However, once at the marketplace, a cry rang out, a young female voice. The group rushed over and saw young Krysta Carver, the Duke's daughter, being taken down a sewer by were-rats. Following in hot pursuit, the group overcame the were-rats and proceeded into the tunnels. Confronting the kidnappers, the elf, Adran, was mortally wounded, and the mastermind behind the attacks escaped. However, Krysta was safe and returned to her father and Sir Lightbringer, although admittedly shaken by seeing the elf's corpse. The dwarf, Oona Stoneforge, was grieved by his friends death, and carried him back to camp. Passing by, the chef, chuckled, displaying racism and glee that the elf had died. Oona went into a rage and beat the chef. Subsequently, he was reprimanded by Sir Lightbringer, with Norvaan present. Oona's pay was docked and he was told to behave, and Norvaan suggested he spar with the monk, a young man-child by the name Saxon Harold. Norvaan spent his time between his guard duties watching over the body of his fallen ally, and was glad to have him returned from the realm of the dead.

For his efforts, and dedication to the service, Sir Lightbringer offered to give him an honorary position in the Rose Guard of Danberg, starting as a Green Rose. Sensing that this is one of those openings that Yeonar Drag'huul had advised him so clearly about, he accepted. He also began training with the bastard sword and a shield, knowing that these were the customary weapons of the Roses. He was often spotted dueling with Sir Lightbringer, honing his skills, and very much enjoying practice with a weapon other than his bow. Soon after, he was given a promotion to the Red Roses, though expected not to serve as town guard, rather a special agent of the will of the Duke of Pineborough.

Being called with the other mercenaries to the Duke's chambers, he was introduced to a thief by the name of Creeps. Immediately suspicious of his intentions, Oona vouched that this halfling was the one that helped him procure the services of the priest of Necrosaro, who performed the raise dead ritual on Adran. Still wary, but accepting, Norvaan proceeded to follow Creeps into the heart of the territory of a gang of thieves known as the Canton Underground. After walking into the bar that was serving as a front for the gang, Oona Stoneforge the dwarven-defender of all things brewed and liquor-infused, politely asked for an ale. The goliath bartender refused him service. Immediately, Norvaan had a look of dread on his face. Apparently, the bartender thought nothing of it, however this was the last time he would serve ale to anyone. As the fight broke out, Norvaan turned a table over, crushing one of the thieves under it. The dwarf and the group filled the bartender with wounds and proceeded to trounce the rest of them. Hearing someone come from below, they pretended to be the normal patrons of the bar, resting and healing. Unfortunately, a peep hole slid open and they were spotted from below. They rushed downstairs, where the half-elven mastermind of the kidnapping was found. Within the basement, there was also evidence that the underground was hired by the Regent Thomas de Agueda to forge the late King's signature to place his cousin Duke Ferdinand de Agueda on the throne.

Providing the evidence to Duke Carver and Sir Lightbringer, the entire retinue stormed the Ducal Council, to confront the treachery. Witnessing Duke Carver lift a man by his neck and place him on the ground, Norvaan was pleasantly surprised to see the quiet man take decisive action. Regent de Agueda was quickly arrested by Marshall Julian Broussard and Duke Agueda left the ducal council incensed.

Ducal Council Adjudicator Appointment

After the arrest of the Regent, the council was without an adjudicator for the calling of votes. Norvaan was volunteered and called the votes for the election of the next king. He found the process familiar and yet strange. Much like his home country, the council was essentially electing the next ruler, and yet these people did not represent the will of the people. Regardless, he performed the assigned duty with tact and the votes tallied eventually gave the election to Duke Eric Carver of Danberg.

Recovering the Prince

After returning Lady Krysta Carver to Danberg, Duke Artannon informed Norvaan that he had an assignment from the King for him and his men. The Crown Prince had been assigned to a caravan of traders belonging to the Lion's Trading Company, and was unaware of his father's ascension to the throne. The danger was underscored by the fact that this caravan was due to travel through the lands of Agueda, and some of his allies, who were unhappy with the turn of events at the Ducal Council. The path they chose is through the mountains, home of the dwarves, but also passes through the heart of Agueda, passing through Villa Agueda. Apart from encountering a few guards, Norvaan and his allies quickly exited the city, on to Sabugal and through Viseu.

Once they had located Prince Allen Carver, they discretely joined his caravan and acted as a disguised escort for him. Upon returning him safely to Canton City, he & his father both thanked the party for their aid.
