The term "race" means many different things. The most common on the world of Keedrah is the idea of different demi-human types. One example is that of Orcs and Kobolds. These types of distinctions help to create clear division lines, and make identification of enemies fairly easy. You don't have to think too hard about that orc standing there with an axe - chances are he's going to attack you.
That said, the racial prejudices that exist towards Insel Elves are quite real. For several centuries, the Insel Elves were looked upon as savages and murderers - this was promulgated by thier early brutalities after being exiled from the continent, and attacking anyone that stepped foot on thier island. It also was helped along by the Continental Elves who generally turn thier noses up at any other race, but were especially exclusionary towards the Insels. They are not as poorly treated as they used to be, but they are rarely afforded the same respect as other races.
Ethnicity
Races, in our sense of the word, referrs more to ethnicity. Because of the intermixing of different racial types in the world, The Canton Kingdom is "Hispanic", with French and British-type influences. The further east you go along the Mesothalassan coast in Canton, the darker skinned and more Arabic people become.
The Gallantrian Empire is Germanic as well as Slavic influences and contributions.
The Frantan Penninsula, holding both the Frantan Confederation and the Free Cities of Dallaall, is more Mediterranean/Greek.
